Exploring Vrachos and the coast around Preveza
Vrachos works as a base because everything is close but nothing is busy. You can spend a whole week on the beach in front of the apartments, or use the car for short runs to castles, ancient sites and forest roads and be back before sunset.
Along the shoreline
- Vrachos Beach
- The beach in front of the apartments. Long, open and sandy, with clear Ionian water and enough room that it rarely feels crowded. Everything else on this page is a detour from here.
- Loutsa Beach
- The neighbouring stretch of the same coastline, a short drive south. Worth a morning if you like walking a different shoreline, and often even quieter early in the day.
- Cafes and bars around Vrachos
- The village keeps a handful of small cafes and bars within easy reach of the seafront. They are informal, family-run and busiest in the evening, when people come down for a drink after the beach.
Inland and further afield
- Castle of Riniasa
- A hilltop Byzantine-era castle above the coast at Riza, close to Vrachos. The ruin itself is modest, but the view back over the Ionian is the reason to climb up.
- Nekromanteion
- The ancient oracle of the dead near the Acheron river, one of the most atmospheric archaeological sites in the region and an easy half-day trip.
- Efyra
- The ancient settlement associated with this part of Epirus, a quiet stop for anyone who likes their history without ticket queues.
- Lekatsa Forest
- Green, shaded walking ground inland from the coast, a good contrast to a week of sand and salt water.
- Aktion National Airport
- The closest airport to Vrachos, serving Preveza and Lefkada. An airport shuttle can be arranged for an extra charge, and free private parking is on site if you drive.
